Akvaterm are the clear leaders when it comes to thermal stores. Akvaterm tanks are purpose designed for use at the centre of your modern low carbon heating system which would typically incorporate a wood/biomass boiler stove and solar thermal panels for the summer. There are a number of different types of Akvaterm thermal store suited to different applications and situations, and they come in a range of sizes from 300lt up to 10,000lt.
Akvaterm thermal stores are made in Finland, where it gets very cold: their heating and hot water systems really need to work well. Akvaterm are the clear market leaders in thermal stores and it becomes clear why when you take a look at one. They are very solidly and simply built – which is what you want: the accumulator tank is often built in to your house – you do not want to have to replace it afterwards. Akvaterm tell us that they give a predicted lifespan of over 50 years for their tanks – and it is only 50 years because the prediction software they have access to only goes up to 50!
The Akva Standard thermal stores is perfect for installations which do not incorporate solar thermal heating. This thermal store is great for use in conjunction with a large boiler stove or a log gasification boiler, and you can get them up to 10,000lt in size.
An Akvaterm tank, in isolation, should lose less than 2 degrees of heat per day which is very impressive – this is due to the 100mm thick polyurethane insulation around the tank and the windshielding outer covering. Most heat losses are likely to be from the connecting pipework, valves and other system elements. We stock very high spec pipe insulation and can advise you how to best insulate your system. Akvaterm produce a range of thermal stores designed for various specific uses.
Details
The 100mm of polyurethane insulation helps to keep the water in the Akvaterm AkvaStandard thermal store as warm as possible. A 2000lt AkvaStandard thermal stores was heated to 75º C and then left for 13 days. The temperature reading of the tank on day 13 was 55 degrees C which I think is pretty impressive.
The AkvaStandard thermal store comes with a DHW coil in the top of the tank - mains pressure cold water feeds into this coil and comes out hot. This is useful as it means you get good pressure to your hot water (no need for shower pumps), you do not need a cold water tank in your loft either, and your hot water is totally separate from the actual water in the tank.
The AkvaStandard thermal store can come as a 1.5bar tank for vented systems, or as a 3 bar tank for pressurised systems. Each tanks comes with tappings to allow you to link heat sources to the tank (such as a boiler stove), electrical heating elements (at the bottom and half way up the tank), thermostats, a tapping on top for the pressure relief / air bleed, and a hatch at the bottom which allows you to install an extra coil if you want to use a secondary hot water coil or for solar thermal perhaps.
Do bear in mind that these thermal stores weigh a lot: you will need to have enough hands to move it around when the tank shows up on site. We recently moved a 360kg, 2500lt AkvaStandard tank and, as we did not have a forklift on site, we used 6 men, ropes, some planks, and rollers to move it around. It was quite easy in the end but a little bit of pre-planning is necessary.
We can help you with specifiying the right size of tank for your installation whether that is in terms of your boiler stove or log gasification boiler.
