The Alice is a classic combination of heating and cooking. The stove is a high output room heater with an oven and small hot plate. The addition of an oven makes the stove an ideal log burner for a kitchen, as you get all the benefits of a log burner plus a fantastic little oven which is great for roasting or even a quick pizza. There is also a small hot plate, where you can put a kettle or coffee pot.
Design
The Alice 490 comes in two varieties - the 490N and the 490L. The 490N is availableeither in Black or cappucino. The 490L is fitted with Ceramic tiles, which come in 6 colours: Light Green, Mauve, Dark Green, Majolica Red, Turquoise Blue and Salmon Pink.
Both varieties have three doors (from bottom to top):
- The bottom door is for the ashtray (measuring 29.5cm x 18cm x 7cm deep) and also have a sliding vent to increase or decrease airflow through the stove. This ashtray is big for a stove this size, which reduces the amount of emptying you have to do.
- The middle door is for the firebox and again has a vent in the top to regulate airflow. It measures 21cm wide x 23cm tall and so will fit most logs and fuel with ease (see picture 9 for the vent system, and picture 10 for the size of the firebox).
- The top door is the oven, which is placed above the firebox for optimum heating. There is a removable oven shelf in the centre and a thermostat to measure the temperature of your food. The oven measures 21.5cm x 31.5cm x 22cm tall, which means it will fit a medium sized plate or pot.
All three doors have a handle which fits snugly into the frame, ensuring that the door stays shut when the handle is down.
Features
- 78% Efficiency (for comparison an open fire is 10%)
- Hotplate on top (measuring
- Secondary air for lower emissions and more heat
- Air wash, to keep glass clean
Fuel
The Alice will run off of any type of wood and has a firebox that will fit a surprising amount of fuel. Wood is one of the cheapest sources of fuel you can get - for comparison, gas will cost you a minimum of 4p per kWH of heat produced, Oil costs between 6p and 10p per kWH (and rising) and wood usually costs 3p per kWH and, if you can find other sources of solid fuel, it is even cheaper.
Regular Maintenance
Owing to the large firebox and large ashtray, regular maintenance of the Alice is minimised and would consist of loading fuel and emptying the ash when the fuel is spent.
On an ongoing basis very little maintenance is required. All that is needed is for: the glass to be occasionally cleaned with a kitchen towel and wood ash, a yearly clean-out of the interior with a vacuum cleaner (usually taking around 10 minutes) and, as with all solid fuel stoves, the chimney must be swept regularly.
